Is it constant or dose the noise change w/ your speed. If its changing w/ your speed it could be wheel bering, if it seems to be closer to the speed of the tranny probobly the differential, no way i can tell w/o hearing it myself, but hopw i gave you a few ideas, good luck bud!

If its coming from the rear of the car and it happens when you accelerate and decelerate it could be the pinion bearings going out it loosens up the pinion preload and allows the pinion to move changing the lash and the contact pattern. You can check to see if it is loose by grabbing the yoke on the front of the rear end housing and see if there is any up and down movement.... If there is sometimes you can take the drive shaft out of the yoke and tighten up the pinion nut "most Passenger cars have a crush collar and when you tighten it up it will add pinion preload. Don't add too much or it will burn up the pinion bearings. It could be other things but its common cause of the whining sound
