i got a long haired chihuahua last week! he is constantly trying to get attention, he whines when we put him in his cage at night, although he is getting better now and sleeping through, but as soon as he wakes he whines, he then also whines when we are eating, or to be picked up, and is always biting. Is there anything we can do to try and stop this?

You are doing the right thing. He is still very young and you just have to be patient with him.

As far as biting, try to be very firm with "no" whenever he does and either hold his mouth closed (if you can...my chihuahua's snout is so tiny lol...can't grab it), or hold the scruff of his neck and gently shake it while saying no. This is what a momma dog does, and they learn pretty quick. They might yelp even if you are really gentle, but because they are startled or displeased, not hurt.

Ignore the puppy whenever it whines. Period.

Pay more attention to him. Get him some chew toys, and pick it up more. If he is still coming to the table, train him to keep away from the table.DO NOT RESORT TO A PUNISHMENT THAT IS CRUEL!

Yes! Training! Try it!

Get a puppy book as just about every single book about raising dog will address these behaviors1

some dogs are whiners and will always be. i have a husky and instead of barking he whines but has gotten a lot better since puppy hood. first off if you dont like the whining do not give the puppy attention when it does it. if you do it will reinforce the behavior and he will learn that if he whines i get attention. if you walk away from him without even looking at him or saying anything he will learn that it will drive the people he loves away and will eventually stop. this may take awhile for him to learn as he is still young, he is also in a transition time where he has to realize his sibling and mother are no longer there for him. the transition time is different between every dog. also treat him like a dog and not a purse. chis can become very needy, scared and unsociallized if they are not exposed to things the way larger dogs are. they are still a dog and need this vital training. if he is biting you, yelp like another puppy would if it was bit. the louder the better. you will be speaking in a language that he understand and with consistency will stop. if he is chewing other things such as furniture, you have to catch him in the act and say no very loud and try yelling at hitting the furniture while he is right there. he will associate the yelling and hitting to the chewing of the furniture and stay away from it. you do have to catch them while they are in the process of doing it because they will not remember exactly what they did that was wrong if you do it 5 minutes later. if you cant catch him and there are specific places that he chews you can get stop chewing sprays that you can apply and the nasty taste will deter them from putting his mouth on it. these tips may not work for your pup but they did for all of my dogs. every dog will learn differently just like humans. hope this helps
