I was driving my truck down the road when it instantaneously started spitting and sputtering. It was trying to die on me and I had to keep pumping the gas. It choked it's way back to the house. It had every indication of a clogged fuel filter or a bad fuel pump. I replaced the filter first and that didn't fix the problem, so I replaced the fuel pump. It initially sputtered a little but then that cleared up. It drove perfect for about 10 miles and then started sputtering. I don't mean gradually. It was all then nothing. I choked on to work. At lunch I fired it up and it purred like a kitten. I drove it home with NO problems. The next morning I drove it, it choked from the start but like an idiot I drove it anyway. When I tried to leave work it choked a bit, then wouldn't crank at all. A co-worker said my coil needed replaced but wasn't sure that was the problem. The glass window (I believe it is called the reservoir) was dry. We took the engine side of the new fuel pump loose, cranked the truck, and no fuel came out. Just for the fun of it, we put the old pump back on and the truck spit and sputtered home. Now I am thinking they sold me a bad pump, which I still believe. I replaced the new pump. Before I hooked it up, I connected the tank side, turned the key, and gas pumped out. After hooking it all back up, It still sputters bad and required a lot of pumping to keep it running. I finally got it to idle without being revved. Now I am thinking it may be the coil, plugs, plug wires, distributor, etc. What has me baffled is, Why did it run 100% normal for those 10 miles after the new pump was installed and then drive home fine only to leave me stranded?
Please let me know what you think it might be.
