my 88 vw cabriolet has a problem ?

it starts nice and runs fine until i turn it off and restart somewhere within 3 hrs or less (more hrs is ok ) ONLY in cold weather. it jumps violently sometimes for 10 min and sometimes 2 min and then runs perfectly I have dona a full tune-up and this did not seem to make a difference

I hope you did not buy the one I traded in. (Kidding). Mine had some trouble where it would run rough and stall in humid / rainy weather. It had a small crack on the ignition coil. I found it by spraying different parts with water (distributor, wires, etc) and once I hit the coil the car died. This is a bit different than what you descibe but thought I'd share as another cabrio junkie.

Two things you can check that will make your car act like this! The engine coolant temp sensor. And oxygen sensor will do this as well! Its pretty had to check the temp sensor I would just replace it! they are not to expensive! And easy to install! The oxygen sensor can be unplugged. I would wait till the car is acting up then unplug the oxygen sensor . if the car starts to run better you need a oxygen sensor or just let it unplugged! hope this helped!

You have a sensor failing more than likely. Can't recall which one causes those symptoms. You should have a check engine light on. Have it scanned and it should lead you to the failed component.
