My 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee won't start?

My jeep has been sitting for awhile and now the batteries dead. So my boyfriend put jumper cables on it and it won't get any charge. Do you think maybe the alternator?

put in a charged battery, start it and see if its charging witha dvm
