My AST level was a 48 and my ALT level was a 93. What does this mean?

The standard range it says is 0-40 but can someone list all of the reasons my liver could be functioning abnormally? Do elevated levels mean my liver is working harder or is it working less? I've been having medical problems since January so this result has been freaking me out. How serious could this be?

Well normal ALT levels are <35U/l for female and <45U/l for male. So they are elevated.
Elevated ALT is found by chronic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, liver cancer and blockage of bile ducts.

Normal AST lever are <25U/l so they are also elevated.
Elevated AST is found by alcohol abuse, liver cirrhosis, liver cancer and blockage of bile ducts. Also injections in muscles or extensive muscle exercises could cause elevated AST levels.

ALT and AST are enzymes that are found in the liver (and AST also in muscles). If liver cells are damaged the enzymes get into the blood. The levels are normally low in blood, but with liver damage they elevate.

Your ALT level is higher then your AST level. This means the liver damage is small. If the liver is badly damaged AST lever are higher. This is because AST is found in the mitochondria, more extensive damage is needed for AST to get into the blood.

I recommend you see your doctor, they will do more tests to see what is wrong with you.
