my car can't shift into park and won't start?

i went to home depot and when i came back to my house i try to park my car and it didn't i put the shift on the park but it doesn't mark as it is park doesn't show anything then i let go the breaks and it started doing backwards till i put both brakes on. ant it turned of now its not parked and i cant turnit back on it needs to be parked ... what do i need to do to fix it?

if you can start ur car in the neutral position ad u can run and drive it then either ther is someting stuck in the shifter like a penny or a small object or ther is somethig wrong with you neutral switch whic is on the top of the transmission. have someone look at it too.

It may be a transmission problem and perhaps the safety switch, which works when the car is in park, and allows you to start the car. The linkage connecting the shifter to the transmission could be out of sync or even disconnected. Check the linkage first at the transmission and at the shifter. A qualified mechanic should check out the problem in greater detail.

If it is cold, snowing, check the linkage on the transmission to make sure there is no ice on it preventing the linkage from moving. Might just need an adjustment. You should be able to start it in neutral if you need to.
