My car makes fumes on steep bumpy roads?

Its a 1990 Subaru Legacy with 310,000 miles on it. Runs great, except that when I go up steep grades, especially on bumpy gravel roads, it emits an acrid odor and sometimes smoke. It seems to be coming from underneath the motor, towards the back of the engine compartment, but I can't narrow it down much more than that. Prolonged high speeds on moderately hilly or flat ground seems to cause no noticeable problem. What is the likely problem?
