my computer reads my dvd-rw as a cdrom how can I make it see it as a burner?

I just installed a dvd-rw on my compaq 5310 I installed it in the old cd rom spot and I am using the cables and all from the old hook up. The computer shows the dvd-rw but it only sees it as a cdrom. How do I make it see it as a dvd burner?
I just tried to play a cd in the dvd rw and it won't play nor does it show that a cd is even in the drive
 
You'd need to download the appropriate drivers from the DVD-RW manufacturers to get it to work, probably. Refer to the documentation, or something.
 
I had the same problem until our IT guy upgraded the drivers for it. Something about Microsoft misreading the equipment model.
