Once you get to the "Shutting down" window you can pull the plug.
Just remember the old programmer's advice: A computer's attention span is never longer than its power cord.
Seriously, pull the plug. When you restart it, immediately get into the system logs to see if you had a failure logged in the applications or system logs from just before you pulled the cord. That might name names for you.
