everything am I safe from fire danger? I had three things plugged into one out for over 2 years now. All of a sudden I start smelling this weird smell & then the outlet started popping w/sparks coming out. The plugs were melted but one plug was completely black as is the outlet. After turning off all the breakers, unplugged the 3 plug adapter & it was completely melted & burned from overheating. There are no more sparks & nothing is plugged in now & it is cool to the touch. I just want to make sure I'll be safe from fire danger.

have a electrition go and see he can tell you weither or not you are. but i would say yes if there is nothing plugged into it then you are

As long as the circuit breaker feeding the outlet is OFF there is no immediate danger. Call a licensed electrician and have the outlet replaced and the wiring inspected for faults. Also replace any of the appliances, devices or their plugs (if easily replaceable) that exhibit discoloration on the metal prongs of the plugs, the plastic part of the plug or any evidence of overheating.

It is likely that one of the plugs, probably the one on the appliance or device that had the largest current draw or rated wattage became oxidized and began making poor contact, or had a partially broken connection between its cord and the plug itself. This would cause the plug or the connection between the plug and the outlet to heat up, worsening the problem and causing possible arcing, sparking and general mayhem.
