My GMC 3500 comercial van won't shift & im stranded in SC any ideas as to what

it might be? We were driving up the highway getting ready to get off an exit, & the tranny just stopped. We got it to go into reverse after pouring a half quart of transmission fluid in but it wnt out of gear when we switched it into drive, then it wouldnt go back into reverse and now it would go into gear at all after that. it wasnt slipping or anything like that, it was all very sudden. any help would be appreciated, we are wondering if it might be a clog of some kind or something loose.
it's automatic
since it's automatic i don't really know... ummm my dad who was driving said no.

If you had to dump half a quart of ATF in it, I wonder if it was low to begin with.
If it was, you probably overheated and snapped the bands.

Can you hear it shift when you move the gear selector? The cable might be misaligned or broken. Does the gear selector have the normal amount of friction, or can you move it a lot easier now?

How many KM are on it? and have you ever flushed the transmission fluid?
