My internet connection lags then crashes...WHY!?!?

At least twice a day something odd happens to my internet connection:
It begins to lag, (I usually look over to my modem and notice that it is flashing red lights and is perhaps restarting) and then the internet is unusable for another 5 minutes at least before it starts working again.
Could it be my components overheating (hardware), or ISP issues (connection). Whatever it is, please explain! before it happens again... :(
 
either your router takes a long time to refresh or it might be connection issues.
