My Jeep Cherokee won't stay in 4wheel drive. Why?

I have a 1989 Jeep Cherokee Laredo with a 4.0L auto. For whatever reason, every time I take it into the mud or snow, the 4wheel drive comes out. I'll be driving along at varying speeds, and all of a sudden the truck drops into 2wd, even though the shift lever stays in the 4hi or 4low spot and the dash light stays on, saying I am still in 4wd. I've checked the linkage and everything else I can think of and had a mechanic friend of mine check it over, and we can't find anything that looks wrong. I know there's got to be someone out there who has had this problem or heard of it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
