My laptop lacks the proper DVD encoder or something like that, What do i do?

I was attempting to watch a dvd on it and a message that said something about not having an encoder or translater or something to that effect. Can I get the thing I need for free online somewhere?
If it matters, my laptop is a couple of years old. Its an Asus with XP.
