I recently had some kind of system cash and when windows loaded up it did a plug and play scan for ALL my hardware also I had to restore all my user setting such as screen resolution etc. I then noticed my DVD drive was not visible in 'My Computer', the device manager informs me that the registry information for my DVD drive is corrupt or missing.
I tried doing a system restore but windows will not let me.
I tried unlaoding/removing my drive.
I tried replacing the drives firmware but the firmware program says this is not the correct model even though I KNOW IT IS (does the drive have to be fully functoinal before you can replace the firmware? I don't know).

Does anyone out there have any (helpful) suggestions before I wall this computer.

PS. why can I post a thread using my registered user name?

This is a fault caused by windows update and can affect anyone stupid enough to use windows (like myself). Widows has released a FixIt for Windows 7 but I don't know if it works on XP/Vista. -- http://support.microsoft.com/fixit#tab0

But here's what to do if want to do it yourself and your confident working on the registry.
This works with XP/Vista/7.
First BACKUP you registry. don't rely on system restore to get you out of the shit, it doesn't do a full reg backup. I use 'Wise Registry Cleaner Free' to do regular backups of my registry.
Open the registry with RegEdit. (I use 'Registrar Lite Free')
Navigate to Hkey_Local_Machine - System - Current control set - Control - Class
Find {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}, open it and delete both 'UpperFilter' AND 'LowerFilter'. Exit your editor and reboot, your drive will be back where it belongs.
I recommend anyone reading this to make a note for future referance - IT COULD HAPPEN TO YOU! :o
