My microphone picks up my music on headphones?

I have a microphone and headphone set that plugs into two jack sockets. However when I try to use things like speech recognition I have to switch my music off because the program is picking up not only my voice but also my music player even though I am listening through headphones.

P.S.

I am running Vista Ultimate.
