My son is scared when someone laughs! This is so odd to me?

My son is 2 1/2 and otherwise a perfectly healthy, SMART, social, happy toddler --- but he is absolutely afraid when I, or anyone else, laughs!

Its like he gets 'shocked' and runs right to me and freezes until it stops. Sometimes it makes me laugh even more than he's scared of laughter ... which causes him to be more scared too!

Or he'll run away from me and hide in another room if I laugh.

This is so very odd.. what could be causing this in him?? I dont understand.

Good thing your son wasn't here when I read this question, it made me giggle. Maybe he feels other people have a strange or particularly loud laugh. Next time someone starts laughing and he is around, try tickling him so he can see everyone is just having fun. My goodness, I can't stop giggling. It could be possible that someone had laughed at something that had frightened him, and now he feels that anytime someone laughs the thing that frightened him may be near. Try to comfort him when he shys away and let him know that he has nothing to be afraid of. That is the cutest story I've heard today.

Maybe the loudness, spontaneity, or facial expressions associated with laughing are confusing and therefore scary to him? Kids seem to develop funny little quirks like this but it's nothing to worry about, I'm sure he'll grow out of it.
