My son woke up screaming with a Fever?

My son woke up unhappy this morning when usually he is smiling. I felt him and he was burning up. I took his temp and it was 100.5 and I thought maybe he was just hot from sleeping so I waited a little while and took it again and it was 100.4. I have made a doctors apt but it isn't until later today. My question is what if his fever is gone by then? Then will they not be able to figure out what is wrong? What could cause a fever in a 2.5 month old? I was thinking he has been teething because he has had his fist in his mouth for days and drooling all over so could this be a normal teething fever?
