and kept billing me, is that normal? According to the woman on the phone, my contract had expired months ago, but they never once alerted me to ask me if I wanted to renew it... Instead they just kept sending me the same bills and let me continue. Is that normal procedure? I know it's my responsibility to know when the contract is up, but why do they keep going with it if it's over?

It seems like they don't want me to know it's up in case I forgot so I don't quit.
Christina - I'm just confused right now because my plan is pretty good, and i don't want to just call up and cancel, they'd never let me hang up... And I have a weird feeling like they want me to not pay a bill, then be subject to a penalty, or cancel the service then charge me the cancellation fee of 300 bucks.

It is illegal for them to lie about my contract being finished right? What law is broken there exactly?

The contract is for a minimum amount of time that you Have to pay. After that time is up, you are free to leave if you want or continue with the service.

My Verizon contract is up and if I want a new free phone, then I have to sign up for another 2 years to get that.

It's standard with all plans, you get a phone, they get a guarantee that you are going to be paying them for the next two years.

Most contracts are to allow you to buy a phone for cheap but at the same time make sure you stay with the company since they allowed you to buy that phone for the lowered price. Now that your contract is up, you are free to move on to another cell company or just stay with your current company. (Note: if you move to another company you'll probably have to buy another phone and sign another contract to get that phone for a small price. If you "upgrade" your phone with T-Mobile, you will have to sign another contract to get the upgraded phone for a smaller price.)

The procedure is normal. My contract ran out two years ago but my service and billing continued without interruption.

yeah you dont have to resign, you are free to leave whenever you want now.
