My t-mobile nokia 1991 won't send text messages, please help?

At walgreens today, I bought a prepaid t-moble nokia 1991, plus a activation card. When I got home, I called right away and activated the phone. I got text messages from t-mobile, but can't get any text messages or calls from my friends. And when I try to text a friend of mine, i'll click "send" and my screen would say, "check operator services"
PLEASE HELP?
