My VLC media player is having problems playing a blue-ray quality movie?

I downloaded a blue-ray quality movie (i think its 1080p)...and tried playing it on my VLC media player. It plays for about 30 minutes and then just quits. I also cannot fast forward or skip scenes without it lagging like crazy. I'm on a macbook pro that is less than a year old so I don't think that is the problem.
Is there another media player that I should use?
