Names of inhabitants of the U.K.

People who congregate at / in old Trafford on Saturdays at 3pm are called Nonces.

or gloryhunters

oops that honour seems to have shifted to highbury now

I really cannot understand this.

There's a thread about names of uk inhabitants and nobody has yet referred to us Yorkshire folk.

ITS ONLY THE BIGGEST BLOODY COUNTY IN THE UK.

Sorry did I shout?

Anyway us that reside in the fair county of Yorkshire (where do you think I got Yoksha from?) are generally referred to as Tykes (though those of us in North Yorkshire refer to them daft buggers in West Yorkshire as Wessies).

Theres a saying in these parts "'Appen tha's two sorts a fowk in't wurld. Yoksha fowk an' 'em a' wishes thee wor."

Translation "There are two types of people in the world, Yorkshire folk and those who wish they were Yorkshire folk."

Its not arrogance.....its a fact.

I'm sorry I didn't realise Manchester had a cricket team.

Or are we talking about Rugby. Let me think...... Nope can't think of a decent Manc rugby team either.

What other sport could you be thinking of? Nothing of any merit I'll bet.

Oh no wait...you mean football (soccer to you Yanks). 22 overpaid, overhyped, nimrods kicking a bag of wind round a field for 90 minutes. Where's the fun in that?

Most Yorkshire folk recognised the futility of that game years ago. Thats why all the Leeds Utd supporters are bloody southerners.

P.S I hate cricket too.

yep

yorkshire superstars in the international arena sounds like a contradiction in terms

Yeah but what a beautiful place Yorkshire is... and Manchester... well it has a city...!!

I wonder if you use the N word in the same way we do...its, erm not very nice. (We discussed this at work the other day - calling someone a nonce, is the same as calling them the most inappropriate swearword.)

You could say they were a bunch of 'barclays bankers', and that would be okay.

Being that im a white british male aged 23, im not allowed to be affended by anything without being called racist or sexist or whatever.

And whatsmore, its apparently impossible to be racist towards me.

[rant]Someone can say 'f****** brits' or whatever and i am not allowed to be offended because to compare that to being called a 'f****** P*****' is far more racist. Women can say men are pigs but if a said the opposite i would be cruxified. Next time you watch sex in the city, imagine the sexes reversed - it would never be allowed on tv.[/rant]

man you've obviously got issues there....i hear the same type of stuff from BNP members

People from Fife (for any Americans out there.....that's part of Scotland....not England) are often called Soap Dodgers.

Always reminds me of my favourite footie song for Cowdenbeath fans (from Fife)

To the tune of the Adams Family

"They're dirty and they're smelly
They come from near Lochgelly
They huvnae got a telly
The Cowden Family"

Soap Dodgers......don't you just love em

I'm from Dundee - we are all called Sir........even the "ladies"

Paul

I have worked with many Asians, was a taxi driver for almost 7 years and I have a friend who is from pakistan. during some of our late night chats I have asked him many things about his culture and religion, he has always given me straight answers (he has promised to take me over to meet his family one day). The word "paki" on its own is not seen as offensive by the majority of them in fact they do see it in the same way as calling a british citizen a "brit". For example if I said to someone "my paki friend is coming over" how can that be seen as racist or offensive? Now if the person you were saying it to came from India then I am sure he would take offense.

Depends where your from and who the person is. In some places it is the norm to refer to asians as "pakis" and hterefore people may adopt that usage and the asian people themselves may become accustomed to it. However, i dont think this makes it acceptable and i wouldnt use it myself...especially not in reference to my friends

I AM DEFINATELY NOT IN ANY WAY A SUPORTER OF THE BNP.

I havent said anything racist, im just pointing out what i think are descrepancies in so called equallity.

I dont think that its ever right to be racist, i just think that in our society if you belong to a group who have been the victims of some sort of 'ism' in the past its sometimes a kind of acceptable to be 'ist' yourself. And since i belong to a group who have apparently never been the victims of racism or sexism or whatever, i am not allowd to have an oppinion or even suggest an oppinion because i would get labelled a racist by a load of people...even though i havent said ANYTHING racist...at all. If i say i dont like being called a brit, people say 'ok...so'. If i say i see loads of sexism towards men on the tv, people say 'ok...so'.

[i dont care either way about being called a brit btw...its just a comparison]

assuming your a white person wether or not you think it is acceptable is not the point. I have been up at the taxi office and they have been calling it to each other. the point I was trying to make is that for the most part they dont find it offensive until it is used in a offensive manner (yes I do know that it is commonly used in a offensive manner). Having said this I personally do not like to use the word so I dont but i still discussed this very subject with my friend and am just passing on his views.

Kosh is spot on with his posts...

gedhab... methinks tis you who have the issues here... perhaps it is time to stop the pendulum swinging to far one way or the other and instead let it stop in the middle...
