ncia sports in grad school?

is it unheard of or very very unlikely that a student who has never played on a specific sports team that she wants to join in grad school can make it to a school's team? I'm talking about college level sports team, but smaller school and I guess lower in level than large public schools? And is there such a thing as sports team representing the school in graduate school?
And if so, are there smaller colleges that aren't as competitive?
