Need advise on my truck what do you think?

I have a 1995 chevy s10 pickup 4cyl. The problem is my transmission. Sometimes the gears work and times they do not. I checked the transmission fluid and its fine. Also I have called like 3 transmission shops. There charges are outrages from $800-$1500. Should I keep looking for cheaper rates or get rid of my truck.
