Need help burning and ripping DVD's PLZ?

So, the DVDs I burn only play on my computer and ps3, not my DVD player. Maybe its because theyre Divx but even the WMV ones dont play on there. Also, I can only burn movies that show up in my Windows Media Player Library and not all movies do even though they seem to be the same format. Last and least why cant I rip the movies back off of the dvd's because I just bought a external hardrvie and would like to back up my movies.

pay attention to what kinda dvds your using.

theres a difference between dvd+r and dvd-r

use the one your not using now.

and its super hard to rip dvds because they have saftey stuff on there so you dont rip them off
