Need help connecting my Ipod Classic to my stereo?

I have a Hitachi AX-M131U stereo, and it has a USB slot in it. If I connected my 2nd gen. ipod nano to it, it worked, but it says 'NO USB' if I plug my Ipod Classic into it. What can I do to get it to work? HELP - 'cause I really love this stereo and don't want to buy a new one :/
