In novel the character Sophie chooses to hide her daughter, Hetty from the father, Marcus. Sophie is a 21 year old girl who fell madly in love with a boy who left with his a band after only a few weeks together. In the novel, Sophie’s sister, Kate writes about Sophie and Marcus’ relationship,
‘She loved him... She only knew him for a bit over a week, but in that time they every available moment together...But soon he was gone...He didn’t offer to stay in touch.’ (Horniman, J. 2004, Pg. 34)
From this passage the reader can see that someone Sophie loved has once again left her to deal with her emotions on her own, without keeping in contact. Sophie falls pregnant and decides that she will raise the baby as a single mother without letting Marcus know he is going to be a father. Sophie’s decision to keep the baby from Marcus was brought on by her fear of being abandoned after her parents left. The reader can see that Sophie is still in love with Marcus and after him leaving once already that once she tells him about Hetty he will leave once again, resulting in the same heartbreak and feeling of abandonment as before. In novel, Sophie makes the decision to keep the child a secret from Marcus for the sake of self-preservation and protect herself from emotional hurt.
The main character Kate keeps various parts of her life a secret in particular her emotions and the cause of them. Kate, just like her sister was abandonment by her parents at a young age and this as greatly changed her view on love and relationships. After her parents leaving, Kate may of felt like ‘if the people who are supposed to love me don’t, then who will ever love me’ and this feeling has shaped her into a negative and judgmental person with a low amount of self-confidence, which would all result feelings of confusion, anger, depression and loneliness. In novel, Kate will at some point show her emotions but generally in extreme ways, through yelling or isolating herself rather than talking about the reasons behind her emotions, so the emotions sick because she never lets anyone now about her feelings toward life.
‘I don’t cry, because crying would do no good. I can only watch.’
(Horniman, J. 2004, Pg205)
From this quote the audience can see that Kate felt strongly about a situation in her life and made the decision to not show any emotion and let it happen. Kate motivation for keeping the cause of her emotions a secret is brought on by being left by her parents and feelings of little self-worth and negative self-image, which pushes her emotions to a breaking point. So it would seem that the events that took place in Kate’s early childhood have affected her ability to trust and to let people in to her internal world.
Kate’s ‘love interest’ of the novel is Alex; a boy in his early twenties who hides that he is doesn’t really know what to do with his life. In novel, the reader finds out that Alex’s family has history with the Second World War and are refugees from Poland. Kate’s relationship with Alex reveals much about him, he works two jobs, one at a supermarket and the other at the bookshop; Hope Springs. He wants to write a novel but is suffering from writers block; he lives alone in a garage without many possessions and has a distant relationship with his father. This shows that Alex doesn’t hide a lot about his life but more about his feelings towards his life and that he’s stuck in nothingness, not knowing what to do or where to go. The reason behind this is Alex thinking that being lost or not knowing how to move forward is embarrassing or being a failure, when actually he is deciding what to do with life. Near the end of novel, Alex tells Kate that he leaving to go back to medical school;
‘Without ever thinking about who you we or where life is taking you...no time to think or reflect. No time to hang about doing nothing much.’pg182)
In this part of the novel, Alex is explaining to Kate how he nearly lost himself by rushing through life and that’s why he’s here because he wanted find out who he was and just be comfortable and relaxed but has realised now that he is too comfortable and has lost sight of things. He understands that he needs to move on with his life and through this realisation he becomes ‘unstuck.’ There are many reasons Alex chose to hide his feelings about being lost, the main being that he doesn’t now why he was stuck and that he didn’t know how to move forward.
