A man who allegedly poured petrol on his neighbour's dog and set it alight has gone on trial in Adelaide Magistrates Court.

The court was told Sammie, a three year-old staffordshire terrier cross, was chained to a tree in a yard at West Croydon in August 2009 when it was doused in petrol and set alight.

Jake O'Dell, 25, who lived next door, faces a charge of ill-treating an animal to cause serious harm.

The RSPCA alleges O'Dell was frustrated by Samie's constant barking.

The dog's owner, Alice McDonald, told the court she returned home to find the dog's fur singed and skin peeling.

A neighbour said they saw smoke in the yard and a man matching O'Dell's description looking over the fence.

THIS is the story from Oz and the salient point is that even the RSPCA admits that that the dog was an annoying barker. And O'Dell was looking over the fence - what does that prove?

Cant believe there is acutally a thread this long about how to poison a dog. Unreal. Some sick people out there. Found this on google.................

Some children are cruel to and torture animals to impress their peers, but future serial killers usually torture animals purely for their own enjoyment. Animal abuse is a recognized sign of a mental disorder.............. Spot on.

Did you actually read the thread though? MOST people here are simply folks that are being driven mad by the noise of a neighbors dog. The vast majority of people try to do the right thing and approach the dog owner in a friendly way only to be greeted with rudeness and abuse. Dog owners simply don't care if their pets bark and some are sociopaths who actively encourage it as evidenced by this thread.

The victim then tries the council who don't care either, they make anyone that complains fill out a bark diary for weeks and submit it to council for review.....who then automatically tell them that there is nothing they can do.

The complainant, who hasn't had a good nights sleep in months, is now out of legal options and the barking persists 24/7 so my question to you is: what would you do?

It's little wonder that people spend a few euro on a pack of slug pellets.

If you are so upset about people who poison dogs, why Google it?

Other threads like "Should I wash my dog with special shampoo?" get an average of one reply. In the case I've quoted the reply was "Use sulphuric acid instead." This one gets over 70 pages and is still going strong. Doesn't that tell you something?

Such as, most people don't like their lives being disturbed by noisy or dangerous dogs. It's very glib to trot out the usual crap about people who hurt animals being the next Jeffrey Dahmer, but the fact is that most people who poison dogs are simply fed up with the nuisance those dogs have caused and want their lives back. And given the lack of support from the authorities in most countries, poisoning or otherwise eliminating the nuisance dog is the only way to solve the problem.

I don't know if this makes you any the wiser, but you are now better informed.

If the pet owner had kids, I couldn't kill the family pet. The barking will stop someday LOL! However, if the dog is a constant nuisance then poisoning is probably the only option. Now killing pets just for fun sake, that is an another thread. Fortunately my neighbors keep their muts quiet during the night and are respectable.

A couple of times over this weekend I've had "An error occurred, [username]" followed by something about new users not being able to post links. Leave it five minutes and the problem goes away. I wondered if The Watcher has been hacking the site but discarded the idea as hacking requires a certain amount of intelligence.

Let's hope those nice people at ihav.net sort it out so that we can get on with the serious task of discussing how to rid the world of annoying barkboxes!

Indeed. We had too many spammers hit the site. Had to disable link posting as a result the board was acting up. Currently working on resolving the issue.

The one that works the best is macadamia nuts. Chocolate also works but you'll need a large dosage. Most nuts is poisonous for dogs. Mix the nuts into a meatball and see if it works. If the dogs are on your property and you kill them there is nothing your neighbors can do because the law is on your side.

I can't answer this sorry but personally i'm a bit skeptical about macadamia killing a dog. If people have gotten results with it then that's great but it just sounds a tad far fetched to me.

If it works it would possibly be untraceable by a vet, unlike anti freeze or rat poison, and far less likely to get you in trouble so I suggest to just experiment and make that dog up some tasty nut burgers and experiment a bit...even if it doesn't die a sick dog is usually a quiet dog!
 
Has anyone tried prescription meds on dogs? I'm thinking about either mixing up a cocktail with all the tablets I can get hold of or trying them singly and noting the effects. Frankly I don't think my neighbors even know they have a mutt so I can take my time and experiment.

I couldn't agree more.

The problem is that most people try to do the right thing and talk to the owner first but the vast majority of them simply don't care and have no intention retraining their dogs. Usually they just make lame excuses like "it's not MY dog barking" or blame it on cats prowling, birds, the full moon or the current level of pollen in the air. Many even become violent and make threats, the watcher tool in this thread is a typical example.

So talking to the owner is out but why not go to the authorities you say. That would be fine if they could be bothered enforcing their laws. Most councils are useless when it comes to prosecuting idiot dog owners for the simple reason that it costs them money to take the owner to court....at least it does in my country....so they choose to make excuses and take no action.

The crazy thing is if dog owners would do the right thing and simply take lil fido inside earlier or put an anti barking collar on them then people wouldn't need to take extreme measures just to get a little sleep.

Judging by the news services there are more and more cases of dogs being baited all the time...people have had enough.
