Need your help to make my personal videos to divx videos :-)?

Hi all,
I would like to ask you a few questions?

1) How can i make a divx video from an AVI file?
2) If NERO 7 will help me to do that or i need a separate software for converting?
3) Can i use my laptop (Compaq C-700) dvd writer to do the DIVX ??
