new Iphone signal worse than 8 year old sony ericsson?

My parents have both indulged in new iphones on O2. I still have the same crappy old sony ericsson I've had for 8 years on O2. Neither of them can get any signal service at home, and I always have full signal. Why is that? Is it just because iphones have rubbish aerials in them? or it it a software thing?
