ok today ig ot a laptop, and i need internet on it. what should i do? i have a desktop computer with internet from a modem.
the internet service is NOT dial-up

to answer the question in its entirety you need to tell us if it is a dial up connection or DSL... it does make a difference. Much easier to do with DSL not to mention the speed will be more tolerable than with dial up. easiest with DSL is to get a wireless router and wireless adapter for the notebook. If it is dial up then you need to connect the notebook to the modem when you want to use it. Networking for a dial up connection is just not worth the trouble, there just isn't enough bandwidth to be of any use(horribly slow).

connect your modem to a wireless router plus you need to add a little more details like what kind of wireless card is in the laptop. routers cost from anywhere between 50 to 200 dollars and basically you get what you pay for.

Hi luifer,

First you have to ask to your Internet Service Provider about your modem, ask them If is router as well... or If is wireless.
If it isn't a router or wireless then you have to buy a wireless router.

In case that your modem is wireless or do the function of a router then you won't need a wireless router. Almost every modem has 2 ports in some cases 4 ports by default.

If you don't want to buy a wireless router then you can connect your laptop using cable UTP Cat 5 or 6, however you'll need to configure the drivers of your modem If you have the CD that cames with your Modem you'll be fine. [This is because one computer will be connected using an USB cable and the other a RJ45 cable (UTP) the cable that seems like a cable phone.

A wireless router is a device that you need in order to connect a computer(s) to a LAN and Internet.
A good option is to get it in BestBuy.com, Frys.com or tigerdirect.com.

A router is a device that extracts the destination of a packet it receives, selects the best path to that destination, and forwards data packets to the next device along this path. They connect networks together; a LAN to a WAN for example, to access the Internet.

Good luck!

new laptop usually comes with vista O.S.
just connect it directly by that cord the desktop is using.
If its usb connection, you might be required driver cd.
If however, your modem is wireless, click on start>Connect to>double click on the network name or your modem>type in your WEP or passphrase>you should be connected.

i just got one too, go to best buy or something and buy a wireless router, if u have no idea what the heck everyone is talking about, go to the store and ask guys about it, then get Geek Squad to install it
