New screen protector, pda won't let me "touch" anymore?

My mom gave me this new screen protector for my tmobile mda [old i know but it's beautiful] and I just put it on recently.
I found that after putting on the new screen protector [old one came off] it won't respond when I touch the screen!

Do you really need a specific screen protector for the mda?
