My mom took her car to the shop yesterday due to not being able to put the car in gear. Took awhile to get in drive to get there, but she did then once she parked they couldn't even get it into drive to take into shop! Once they opened it up they saw that the gear shift (inside) was absolutely COATED in a sticky (soda like) substance! She has had the car less than 6 months and has never spilled anything in the car! She's very anal about this. It was a brand new car. She is upset because the only way this could has happened is if someone who worked on the car poured it in there, or it was done before she purchased the car. Does anyone have any tips on what we can do about this? We know we didn't do it.

Someone is not telling the truth. The cupholder is located right next to the shifter, and it's easy to spill a drink into the shifter when you hit the brakes too hard in rush hour traffic.
Too bad, so sad! Your Mom will have to pay the repair bill.

If its brand new bumper to bumper warranty covers anaything, so why ask...? Is it not brand new...?

I guess I could tell you to take it to the shop to have them look at it but the car is already there. So I'm not sure what you are asking.

How did the sticky substance get there? If you or your mother don't know, how do you expect us to know. Did someone borrow your mother's car and spill something? Who knows?

Not much you can do about it but get it fixed and move on.
