I just added 6 new fish to an empty. i took all the water out except a bucket full of old water, left the old filter in and didn't clean the rocks and branch that have always been in the tank. i did all this earlier this afternoon and now the water has become really foggy. is this harmful to the new fish? i don't want the fish to die the first day i have them. is that going to happen? is there anything that i can do? why is it foggy?
any help is appreciated, thanks.

you didnt let the tank cycle first. allowing bacteria and such to be activated. the cloudy water would go away as soon as the bacteria builds up again. and hope your fish would survive till then.

saltwater or fresh? I think you definately should have let it stabilize itself before adding fish. I'll be chanting for your fish.. *buddhist*

did you eliminate the chloride using aqua safe???

but the main problem might be the filter, you always have to clean it when you clean your tank.

if you don't want to change the water again, then, if you have live plants put them in the plant and turn on the light for at least eight hour per day for three days the plants will filter out the cloudiness.

Sounds like all the sediment in your gravel has been disturbed.

is this harmful to the new fish? Its not ideal but I don't think your fish are going to die. I use filters rated to clean double the volumes of my tanks. After I vac the gravel it takes an hour or so to clear up.

i don't want the fish to die the first day i have them. is that going to happen? Not if you clean the tank properly and change your filter media.

is there anything that i can do? I would start over but this time wash the gravel in cold water.

why is it foggy? Filter is overloaded or you need new carbon.

u want to run filters for at least 24 hrs befor putting any fish in the water. after that when u do water transfers it will get foggy again but it will clear up. get some algie eaters if u dont have any they help keep tank clean
