Nicotine patch confusion?

So today I decided to patch my way to being a non-smoker. I expected it to make me feel like I had just smoked (calm, cool, collected) but I don't feel anything... I don't feel the urge to smoke, which isn't a complaint, but it doesn't feel like I've had one either. Could my long years of smoking built up an immunity to nicotine, or am I just expecting more than what this patch offers?
