I live in an old house. Not sure of the date but it was built before electricity and running water. My grandparents passed and left it to my parents. When they moved in around 1970 they were told it was a hundred years old... and you can tell. It's starting to fall apart and there isn't a whole lot my poor elderly mum can do to keep up. So we keep finding interesting things....
In the upstairs room that was once almost the entire second floor there is an old vent in the floor. Beneath this in the space between ceiling and floor, there is wood that doesn't match the rest. So obviously something came up through that floor. My vents were poorly installed as well. Mum says they didn't install the vents and gas heat until 1970. So when could this vent be used for? Was there an oven below or did a pipe come up through the floor? Is this how they heated homes. There are two fireplaces, is it somehow connected to that? The vent is iron and says "Reading Pa. Mt Penn stove works"
