Older SUVs with best gas mileage?

Hey, I'm looking to buy an SUV in the next few months, and wanted some input on the best ones. I know it's hard to find an SUV with good gas mileage at a cheap price, but does anyone know one with pretty good gas mileage that's older? I'm talking '96-'01. I would like a 4runner but unfortunately those run $5,000 or higher generally. I'm looking to spend $2,000-$3,000. I'm a college student, that's why.
