Olympics!

Could it be that the women don't dive at the ground trying to draw penalties?

I have always been confused about football because of how differently it is played in different places at different times. e.g. Historically in England footie was a pretty rough game with a lot of contact and the men were ''hard'' and could take a knock. Now we have a more ''european'' game and men fall over mortally wounded at the drop of a hat.

I think that the women's game tends to get around all this by having neither the excessive roughness nor the diving... maybe what men's footie should look like.

Football was always the most popular women's sport where I lived and few men would play it ( especially if there was an ice hockey rink or rugby pitch about. ;' )

Just in case no one was watching and blinked, we do have one British competitor entered in wrestling this Olympics...Ukraine-born wrestler Olga Butkevych

Butkevych will be Team GB's sole Olympic wrestler after the sport failed to meet agreed selection criteria. British Wrestling was initially awarded three places at the Games, but lost two after a ruling by the Olympic Qualification Standards panel, which included Sir Clive Woodward and Team GB chief Andy Hunt. Butkevych was among a group of eastern European athletes brought over to train with the GB squad in 2007. She was granted a British passport in May.

Interesting that this athlete was brought over here to train and has just been over long enough to be given a passport before the Olympics... she doesn't sound very British but hey what do I know..... just seems odd the way the Olympics are run. See the following blurb about ''no plastice brits'' ;' )

London 2012: Andy Hunt defends Olga Butkevych's credentials

Team GB chief Andy Hunt said there are "no plastic Brits" in the British team after it emerged Ukraine-born Olga Butkevych is likely to be the host's sole wrestler at London 2012.

Butkevych was among a group of Eastern European athletes brought over to train with the GB squad in 2007.

The 26-year-old has been competing for Britain for five years but only recently received a British passport.

"To be clear, there are no plastic Brits," Hunt told BBC Sport.
"Everyone who will compete for Team GB has a British passport and has fulfilled all the eligibility criteria and I'm totally satisfied around that."
"We haven't lowered the bar, I would say we've broadened the bar to allow them to have one wrestler competing in London.

"That's important because that wrestler, had they had the opportunity to compete in the qualifying tournaments for GB, is likely to have qualified."
On Tuesday, British Wrestling was rocked by the news it was losing two of the host-nation berths provisionally awarded by the British Olympic Association (BOA) in April last year.

The Olympic Qualification Standards (OQS) panel, which included Hunt and fellow Team GB leader Sir Clive Woodward, ruled that British Wrestling would only be allowed to send one athlete. That one wrestler will come from the female -55kg division in which Butkevych won Olympic test event silver at London's ExCel Centre last year.

new someone was going to make the maybe its because "the men are all faeries comment" :P, at the top level yes acting ability is as necessary being able to dribble the ball these days but it still takes some bottle to get in front of shots like defenders and goal keepers have to, and you don't have to look very far to find the rough sport it used to be. Those guys on the hockey rink should have paid the local 5 a side league a visit for a laugh. But I don't think its anything to do with that, there's just something about woman's football in relations to men's that seems so much slower paced, as I say its strange, I don't normally notice distinctions so drastically between female and male divisions of a sport as much as I do with football I just can't say what it is.

Think that there are 43 listed clubs in the country and no one competing from the clubs placed high enough in a qualifying event to enter. What wrestling there is here is often focused towards sub-wrestling/offtopic and people aren't competing that much in freestyle.

To be honest you don't really have the infra-structure in place the way in is in many countries. We started when we moved from lower to middle school (year 8) and then trained/competed daily through the winter every year. After that there was always uni/college competitions for people to continue in. I don't think it is that popular a sport here and thus there are few competitors that will go on to international competitions...sort of like Canada in footie :' P

There is potential but as I said the interest in non-freestyle sort of scuppers it. I've seen a few British medal winners but often they are foreign wrestlers who have been transplanted here.

Hope that makes sense.

Can't use it outside of the UK Damn internet. You're on a global system and I can get the bbc on my satellite package why can't you let me stream it online

Yep, like Sketco said, that there television coverage is UK only. The site will let me listen to streaming radio, but I suspect mere radio coverage would be too frustrating to me. Anyway, I appreciate the thought. Thanks.

Looking forward to all the sports! First year that Women's boxing has been in the olympics, that's a piece of history.

Anyone have tickets for the Olympics/Paralympics?
Anyone volunteering to help?

Currently out with a semi permanent knee injury and Moderating MA websites to compete.

To be fair I'm not sure what the current state is with pure freestyle wrestling in UK. My coach is currently teaching a small group in Kent somewhere which is more of a precedent for those going into offtopic.

We did have 1 UK male wrestler ready to go, but he was a risky one as (a) he was Eastern Euro.. (b) just got done for PED.

LAW and some Police forces in the UK still hold Freestyle comps. I was in the Southern UK Nationals (ran by LAW) which I'm pretty sure is every year.
I've done 1 Cornish Wrestling tourney for fun.

But mainly also what LFD said. Its not a big enough sport over here still. It exists! Just not at the level as other countries, which is sad. However there is an increased interest due to the boom of offtopic. But once again its more for offtopic than straight up 'rasslin.

I personally think its the Singlets that puts everyone off.

Maybe try using a proxy? Here is a free one: hidemyass.com

The proxy allows you to hide where you are when a program is supposed to only be for a certain region. It's not illegal and it's a matter of whether you can live with this. I have some other solutions but they aren't something I can post so if you wish further info then PM me.

If you want to see Olympic events lots of people who are receiving the feeds legally are also streaming them so really it's a matter if you are happy to watch a stream that is online.

If all else fails you are welcome to fly over and join me in the pub for the few events that I might really make time to watch. At this moment I am already sick of the Olympics and thinking of ways to escape all the hoo hah....

Hope this is not crossing any of the TOS but as these methods are not illegal , only frowned upon, I hope that the mods will be kind to me if there is a problem.

FWIW

It chaps my behind that they never give Olympic weightlifting coverage. Typically you'll just see the final clean and jerk that wins the gold and that's about it. I gotta admit I get a kick out of watching the decathlon and the similar contests too. Those guys and gals are incredible athletes.

A couple of people asked about online coverage. Here is a full schedule of the online coverage that NBC will be doing. It looks like most of the events will be streamed.

Funny OwlMatt that they have the judo finals and the weightlifting on at almost the same time on different feeds.... like maybe they thought no one would want to watch women doing judo and weightlifting :' P

Good find!!

Sad news. That NBC streaming site I found only works if you (a) live in the USA, and (b) are paying for a cable or satellite service that includes NBC.

Sad.

Does anyone know why Mary Poppins was fighting Voldemort? They lost me there.

And call me a cantankerous old soldier but when they were marching out the UK flag did anyone else see the RAF fellow at the back was marching off the wrong foot the entire time?

Yeah, that was a bit odd. Plus, when were there several hundred Mary Poppins? Also, why were all those Great Ormond St. hospital patients jumping on their beds? If they can do that, then why are they in hospital burdening the NHS. Bloody freeloaders! (note: said in jest)

I think he got out of step when they were going up the hill, he seemed to recover when the ground leveled out. Wasn't exactly a standard parading ground.

I usually watch quite a bit of the Olympics. For some reason I just don't care if I watch it this year or not. Maybe Judo but that'll be it.
