On a 3 mobile cap and want to get iPhone 4?

I'm currently on a $49 cap for this phone with 3, but I wanted to get the iPhone 4. Is it possible for me to pay off the remaining cap for my new phone and then upgrade to the iPhone 4?

Or, should I buy the iPhone 4 outright and just continue paying for my other cap as credit?
