I'm trying to backup my phone onto my sd card and want to find out what all information, data and files are saved onto the phone itself such as apps contacts sms etc. Basically my question is what is saved on the phone and what is saved on sd card.
I mainly just want a list I'm not asking how to backup my phone, I just want to make sure when I go to factory reset my phone that I have everything securely tucked away somewhere else so that when I put the sd card in I have everything inc applications in order, it took me forever to get my phone the way I want it mainly as far as apps I don't want to lose anything, I'm the kind of person that would rather pay for a whole new phone than to lose the data inside of it

If you're using a Google Mail account with an Android phone and you use the Contacts tool, it's directly interfaced with your on-line Google account, so you don't need to back up Google mail, Contacts or Calendar. they are already backed up in Google's cloud.

SMS messages are usually saved on the phone (and/or the SIM card).

Some apps are stored on the phone. Newer versions of Android can optionally store apps on the SD card.

Go to the Android Market and search "backup." You will fins a bunch of free and low-fee apps that can do various types of backups.

You can view what's on the SD card by installing the Astro file tool (free, on the Market, has some backup capabilities). Or, plug the phone's USB port to your PC or laptop and follow the prompts on the phone to mount the SD card to your computer. You can then browse it like any other drive.
