Opened letter arrived through the post?

I recieved an open letter thorugh the post which was an xmas card along with other post. The xmas card envelope had been ripped open and there was a burn mark on the card, i was wondering how this would happen. Luckily there was no money inside. How would it happen from someone posting it?
Just wondered.
