The writing actually says:
"There was once a samurai named mosobuke who looked a little moronic, and when he attended the dinner, and the mudfish was being prepared, a retainer made the joke 'Mosobuke's mudfish salad'. A man made the mistake of repeating the remark in his presence, and mosobuke cut him down.
Later, when lord hitsoshige heard the news, he refused to punish mosobuke, saying
'a man who makes fun of others is himself a fool. It was his own fault that the man was cut down. To be insulted and say nothing is the act of a coward'
It is said that mosobuke was not punished."
