Playing music in my car from my iPhone using Auxiliary jack?

I am trying to play music from my iPhone in my car. My car is equipped with an Auxiliary jack mounted in the stereo section of the dash. However, the music plays at a much lower volume through my speakers. Could this be because of the type of chord im using??
