Pls, what codec is needed to make bluray movies off of torrents work? Thanks?

I'm new to the torrents themselves, but the ones I downloaded aren't playing for most part with:
http://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm and now I'm told to get http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
Is either of these valid? One movie..... ended up playing, the other two didn't, so I don't get it.

if videolan wont play it.. dont mess with downloading any private codecs... a lot of them have trackers.

get vlc from videolan.org

I assume it's a .mkv file you are trying to play? VLC should work. I have heard good things about it, but I personally haven't used it. I prefer Media Player Classic.
