Problems with Sony Ericsson phone with Virgin Mobile?

I am with Virgin Mobile. I have tried a couple of times today to ring people, however when I tried to call it just goes back to the main contact menu. It has rung out later in the day. I also have tried to send a message but again had to try several times before I could send the message. What is the cause of this, is it the phone?
