Puppy won't stop whining and being restless?

My family is currently watching a 6 month old German Sheperd male for our neighbors, and it is his first night away from his owners. He is whining alot and pacing around, probably b/c he misses his owners. Today he whined alot as well, but calmed down at points when he was sleeping or playing with our 3 and half year old male corgi. My dog is sleeping right now, but the german sheperd is still restless. He'll lay down for a few minutes, then get up and whine and pace for a few minutes, and then lay down again for a few minutes. We have a crate we could put him in, but I do no know if it'll help. So is there anyway to calm him down- or should we just let him calm down himself?

If he LIKES the crate, then it would help him significantly. Crateing is a natural instint for dogs (they are den animals). It is a safe place for him to relax. If he doesn't like the crate, help him by placing bits of food inside it and letting him walk inside and play. A chew bone, or chew toy given to him may help too. Leave the door open when he goes in, just make sure he knows its there and it's a safe place for him to go. Our dogs always sleep in their kennels (even though we leave them open) because they know it's their safe place. =)
