Purchase a new number plate for my car? or I can use the original plate? ?

I just bought a car from my friend, but he won't sell his new customised number plate to me. Someone told me I can get him to tell AA? or Landtransport? to use the car's orginal number plate that he got when he purchased the car. (he's already returned the original plate back to the Landtransport?)

Just wondering if I can do it this way,and use the original plate instead of buy a new one?
