I was going through old pictures and stuff with my mom, and we found a letter from my great grandmas sister.1943 Houston, Texas (Galveston island) during world war 2. her sister was 22 and was writing a letter to her friend (not really sure how we got the letter?) but in the letter she said '.... I broke up with Rosemary, but don't ask about it yet and don't refer to it in the return letter...' and the letter seemed kind of coded, and cautious, and as if she was writing to a past girlfriend or a close friend that obviously knew. im guessing she was a lesbian? she was living with a "guardian" in galveston while in school (the rest of family was in Houston) to become a nurse in the war. . it was so awesome to find that out! my family is Spanish and French, and very strict catholic, but it didn't seem to be a problem that she was a lesbian? or at least she wasn't shunned. or whatever. im guessing this was very scandalous back in the 40's? especially a Spanish/French catholic family? My mom never heard anything about her, i cant ask my great grandma, because she died, and i cant ask her sister who wrote the letter, because she died 3 years later during a surgery, and she probably wouldn't be alive today. :-(

so my question is, was this common? was this scandalous? espicially in the 40's? thanks for answering! <3
