Question about "Bell" potty training?

I read about a way to teach dogs to go potty outside where they learn to ring a bell. The way I read was to put some peanut butter or something like that on a string on a bell. Then you get them to lick the peanut butter and that makes the bell ring, and you put them outside. I guess you just do that everytime you let them out and they learn..?

So has anyone tried this, and did it work? I'm thinking that maybe the dog would just learn to ring the bell to go outside, not to potty outside. Does anyone have a better method of bell training? Or if you don't think this is an effective method, do you have info on a better way to train them?
